Wigs are available in many different shapes, colors and fabrics. But that’s not all – naturally you can also style and add details to the doll wig yourself. Cute pigtails, braids or even a self-made haircut are some examples.

Buying your doll wigs online

The international market is a very huge place to get things like wigs or eyes for your doll. So you should always try to search for english terms in order to get the most results. Even though it depends on where you are from as there is a big asian market as well which surely has some great offers, but often only in their foreign language, for example chinese. So most effective terms are searching with “BJD”, even though you want something for your Dollfie Dream, as they share similar sizes! So don’t forget to write the size (preferably in inch) afterwards like “BJD wig 8-9” so you will get many results.

Which size for your Dollfie Dream?

The wig size is usually stated in inch, keep this in mind when ordering or measuring your doll! Dollfie Dream dolls are special as their different doll sizes share the same wig size (about 22.5cm). They might even wear 9-10 inch wigs with the help of a silicone cap.

There are many different styles and colors your can choose from as wigs for your Dollfie Dream.

What you should know before buying

Warning – stain danger

You should always consider thinking about the inside fabric of a wig. The 3 most used colors for the inside fabric of a wig are: black, beige and brown. It depends on every company which color they will use, but mostly it depends on the hair color itself. Darker inside fabric for darker hair and so on, to achieve a more natural looking wig.

The material of your doll is just vulnerable to dark or very colorful fabrics / materials. So before you put on your doll’s new wig, check which color the lining has. Please be careful when dealing with dark material, these can discolor your doll’s head. And in the worst case, this can not be removed because the color has sunk too much in the material.

Dollfie Dream owners should be especially careful because of the soft vinyl material of their doll. They are extremely susceptible to stains. But I also advise BJD owners to keep an eye on the fabrics and materials.

Wig caps protect and hold!

In order to declare the fight against evil discoloration I recommend you to buy a “wig cap”.  This is a silicone or fabric cap that you can put on the head of the doll before you attach the wig.  A positive side effect on top of that – the Wig Caps help to keep the wig in place, especially those made of silicone are very suitable for it. Personally, I always recommend having a few Wig Caps at home, as they are not expensive to buy but are very practical helpers!

Silicone or fabric? You can choose which one you prefer on your doll.

Synthetic wigs

Consist of an artificial material. These hairs are characterized by the fact that they have a more or less natural shine. However, there are a lot of differences per manufacturer in terms of quality. You can find these synthetic wigs in infinitely different colors and shapes! It is probably the most common type of wig. Be careful when straightening these hairs using only low temperatures. Otherwise the material may melt and damage your straightener / iron.

Synthetic wigs are a commin choice and come in many different styles, colors and sizes.

Mohair wigs

These fluffy wigs are made of “angora goat” hair. This natural fiber has this special appearance and softness. Mohair can be styled very well because of its texture (you can use some water if necessary)! Different colors and shapes are available for mohair wigs, but there is a more limited selection of models here in my opinion. There are straight and curly (which the material naturally brings with it) versions to get. I would not recommend you to straighten these wigs with an Iron etc. but you can use a little comb to get rid of the curls with brushing them away gently.

If the curls of a mohair wig have disappeared, you can easily conjure them back. Moisten the hair with some water. The water can be kneaded in at the tips! If the middle hair and tips are wet (do not exaggerate :)) you can shake your wig back and forth by holding it at the centre of the inside. Now the little curls will be visible again.

Alpaca wigs

As the name says those wigs are made out of alpaca wool. Similar to the mohair wig these wigs are super fluffy as well and mostly have a very good quality too. This depends on where you get these wigs. There are many people who are customizing and creating their own doll wigs with alpaca wool. They are often colored in the most different and beautiful kind of ways.

Get the wig ready

As sad as it sounds most wigs will not arrive in perfect condition at your home.  This has nothing to do with inferior quality, but with transport by parcel. The wigs are sometimes in one and the same box for weeks, being whirled around while transporting. Often they are simply a bit “flat”.

Don’t worry at all, little flaws can be fixed in no time!  It is a big help when you put the wig on your doll first. If you have the wig attached you can start to comb the wig. Be careful, not that you will combing the wig from the head of your doll. Hold the wig on the top of the head. Remember when you have a wig with many curls to use a big comb and be very careful, so that the curls won’t be damaged! After combing the wig you can start styling the wig to your liking.

Straight wigs made of natural hair must first be brought into shape when attached, because they are so soft and fluffy. Take your time, because it will be worth it. In my opinion hair is a big part of your doll and character. Does the pony fit properly, is the hair smooth and well combed or should it even be frizzy? Shape out the details of the wig and give it the finishing touch.

After putting your wig on your Dollfie Dream you can define the wig more proberly. Like how the bangs will look like at the end. Some little effort can change the whole appearance of your Dollfie Dreams wig.
It can help you a lot when you take your time and brush the wig first. After that you can define each hair and strand better.Mohair wigs can be styled in many cool and crazy ways thanks to their fluffy fabric.

Curls need more attention

Please use a big comb for curls, otherwise you might just destroy them. You can even use your fingers and run through the wig carefully. That way you can define the curls even better!

How to style a wig

So after attaching the wig to your doll and getting it ready you can start to style it even more. For example with some water! I can recommend you to try this out for yourself. Just put a bit of water on your fingertips of your index finger and thumb (after washing your hands!) and then you can start styling the wig – like the bangs for example: putting the hair together and give it a more defined look.

Please be careful with hair spray or gel – it might damage the material of your doll or face up!
Of course there are exceptions: Some doll companies are offering specific hair styling products for your doll. Although when purchasing one of these please take care and read the manual carefully.

You can also create your own wigs if you like!
